Student who healed remains: “No Nazis”

The atmosphere in Lund was tense on Friday after Thursday’s news: two students and a teacher from Ka 0000-skolan were suspended after receiving information about Hitler’s greetings at school.

On its website, the school wrote that there is a small group that “yearns for totalitarianism.”

Something that surprised many students at the school.

– It was a shock, it doesn’t feel good that the school is known in that way, you don’t want to be connected to Nazism, says a young woman who is second in the school and who wants to remain anonymous.

Internal investigation

Shortly after the start of classes, the Cathedral School discovered a photograph where a student can be seen, on the far right of the image, saluting Hitler.

– It was a class photo taken by all new Katten students. There, a student is seen saluting Hitler and the school became dissatisfied and grabbed her, says education director Stefan Norrestam.

The school then began conducting an internal investigation and found that two students from the school had harassed another student.

But according to Rasmus Törnblom, chairman of the education committee in Lund, the suspended students have nothing to do with Nazism or racism.

– Hitler’s salute is serious in itself, but that is what triggered the investigation where they have discovered several things that the school should look at. Hitler’s salute did not make any of the students suspended, says Rasmus Törnblom.

Did the student who gave the Hitler salute stay at school?

– Yes it is.

Teachers spread Hitler’s greetings

A teacher was also suspended after posting an image on social media of a student with his arm raised in what can be interpreted as a Hitler salute.

– I should have realized that the image could be misinterpreted, but my judgment clicked. I’m sorry now, the teacher tells SVT.

The teacher explained that the gesture is not related to Nazism but rather a group exercise where the students raised or lowered their arms.

– My big mistake was that I posted the image on the class Facebook page afterwards, not realizing how it could be perceived, Nyheter Skåne tells SVT.

“Hard to understand”

Ari Mawati, 17, is in his second year at Cathedral School. He says he is surprised by what happened.

– I find it difficult to understand that he greets Hitler, especially if he knows a lot about history, he says.

Nils Skoog, 18, is in his third year at the school. He says he believes the school did the right thing in launching an investigation and thinks Hitler’s salute was a joke in bad taste.

– I think that the Nazi salute that the student made could have been a joke, a joke in bad taste. I have not seen it myself and have never noticed Nazi ideas in school, says Nils Skoog and continues:

– Everything is unexpected, there are many intelligent students in the school. This does not reflect “Cat” at all and I hope it doesn’t happen again, says Nils Skoog.

A girl who is in second grade and wanted to remain anonymous said she has a hard time believing that the second-grader who was suspended has connections to the Nazi movement.

– I know one of the guys and he’s not a Nazi at all. She knows a lot about history and I read a long Facebook post she had written a few months ago where she wrote about how horrible what the Nazis did during WWII, she says.
