The images, which were first published by TV4Nyheterna, are from a police intervention in April 2019 in the center of Hjällbo on the outskirts of Gothenburg.
Site surveillance images First, it shows how two policemen who have just treated a person are surrounded by a gang, who have seen the intervention and reacted.
From the police body cameras, you see how the gang stays close and refuses to disperse despite the calls.
When one of the policemen has his baton in front of him, he is threatened.
– If you touch me with that, you will get it back, says one of the men, after which the police again ask the man to back off.
The photos show the problem. with an increasingly difficult work environment for police in certain particularly vulnerable areas, says Fredrik Lennartsson, area manager in Greater Gothenburg Northeast. At the same time, he says, you have to keep two balls in the air at the same time.
– These images show this problem with a large group of young people who quickly come together and oppose the police intervention and that is also what we find. But in normal cases, we work here all the time and it is not like that every day.
But is it a fair picture of police work in the field?
– Because it happens, is and happens.
– But we must also know that there are no roadblocks and that is why every day. But that is part of the problem.
Björn Johnsson, security ombudsman for the Police Association, says the footage from the intervention in Hjällbo shows everyday life rather than an exception for many police officers.
– Up to 70 percent of the police officers in the external service state that they have been exposed to unauthorized influences or threats of the type that we see in the images.
Such types of threats, he says, always crawls under the skin of the policeman in question.
– This is what makes it uncomfortable and that we have started talking about unauthorized influence in another way.
Erik Nord, the police chief of Greater Gothenburg, tells TV4 that the men who disturbed the police intervention of the video in 2019 belong to the same criminal groups that recently carried out car checks in different areas, a kind of barricades.
Area manager Fredrik Lennartsson says there is a clear interest in police not being on the scene in certain areas and making interventions.
– You do not want the police to be in their place and that is part of a behavior of a territorial network. If you stay there and incite the police, you clearly show that you don’t want the police to be there.
Fredrik Liljestrand is also careful highlighting the professionalism of the police intervention in Hjällbo.
– If you look closely at the photo, you see how one of the policemen stops the baton. It says something about mindfulness and it’s a quick decision. Instead, if the situation worsens, there may be a completely different outcome.
