After 35-year-old Poya Asbaghi was fired as IFK Gothenburg coach on Thursday, GT was able to say that Kennet Andersson will also be leaving the sporting director assignment shortly.
Now Blåvitt confirms the GT reveal.
Pontus Farnerud, a former assistant athletic director, takes over and Kennet Andersson gets an advisory role in his place. The plan was to make these changes later, but the change of coach sped up the process, Blåvitt writes on his website.
– We want all of these roles to be in place when the new coach takes office and it feels good to be able to introduce this now, says club director Max Markusson in a statement.
Leaving work for private reasons
Pontus Farnerud thus assumes the tasks that Kennet Andersson has had.
– My ambition is to do everything possible for the association, regardless of the role. Kennet and I have worked very closely and it feels good and safe to know that Kennet will be around with his experience and wisdom. The athletic director role means more responsibility, which is inspiring. Right now the focus is on creating the best conditions for the team and management to achieve results, bring the team to the table and the opportunity to take us further into the European game, says Farnerud.
Kennet Andersson is leaving office for private reasons, but will work part-time with his role on the sports council and as an advisor to the sports director.
– I am very attached to assuming the new role and also being there to support Pontus when he needs me. We’ve gotten very tight and it feels great that he’s taking over the sports manager role, says Kennet Andersson.
Ferran Sibila continues
At the same time, it is clear that Ferran Sibila, who was Poya Asbaghi’s assistant coach, will continue to coach IFK Gothenburg.
– It is clear that personally I was saddened that Poya had to leave. He is a really skilled soccer coach, we have worked closely together and he is also a close friend. I certainly come from Barcelona, but I have very strong feelings for IFK Gothenburg. I feel a lot of support from everyone at the club, especially from the players and managers, who would like to keep me. That made the decision to stay even easier, he says.
Sibila, together with Alf Westerberg, will lead the training sessions for Blåvitt and the team in a possible match until there is a new head coach.
According to information from GT, IFK Gothenburg is close to finishing with a new coach.
– That process has started. It really started Thursday morning. Out of respect for Poya and because we want to be friendly and professional, we had not made any contact with possible successors before. Now we have come a long way and we are working with several different tracks. There is a lot to work on, but the most important thing is that it will be a correct solution and not a quick one, says the club’s director, Max Markusson.
