At Rogsta Bergön in Hudiksvall there are 240 holiday houses, surrounded by forest with abundant lingonberry rice. This makes the area popular with berry pickers.
But several residents think that some of the berry pickers are disturbing. That they do not respect the right of public access, litter, act threatening and meddle by parking on plots and blocking entrances.
I called the police about berry pickers
Kjell Rudolphi and Margareta Carlstrand and their neighbors have repeatedly told berry pickers to stay away from private property over the past week. On Sunday, several people were evicted from the neighboring plot, but on Tuesday they returned, writes Hela Hälsingland, who was the first to speak of the incident.
Margareta Carlstrand later came across eight vehicles parked near the home. In connection there were about 30 berry pickers.
He called Kjell Rudolphi, who went there and started taking pictures of the cars. At the same time, he called the police command center.
– Then they pushed me and pulled me so I wouldn’t take photos, says the 75-year-old.
“He did a karate kick”
A tumult broke out. It is said that one of the berry pickers took a branch from a forest tree and struck Margareta Carlstrand on the shoulder.
– He also did a karate kick, but I had time to get away, he tells Hela Hälsingland.
When Kjell Rudolphi stepped in, he was attacked too, he says.
– I experienced that four people beat me on the ground, and gave me at least two punches and at least four kicks to the sides and chest. I dropped my glasses and hurt my eye a bit.
Kjell suffered a concussion
Since the path outside the house is narrow, one of the men must also have taken the car key from Margareta Carlstrand, who got in the way of the berry pickers’ vehicle, and led it into a ditch.
After half an hour it was all over.
– Margareta has told me that I was thrown into the woods again, but I have no recollection of that, says Kjell Rudolphi, who claims she had a concussion in connection with the assault.
He has sought care and has not received more serious injuries than that, but he has felt bad, he has been dizzy and in pain.
Kjell Rudolphi says he is “incredibly disturbed” by the incident.
– That this can happen. That the right of public access be used for such intrusions. Now I demand a trial.
The police have started operations
All Hälsingland writes that the police searched several vehicles and identified several people, but did not arrest anyone suspected of the assault.
It’s not uncommon for berry pickers to enter private plots, police say, and that worries people.
– To those who pick berries, we communicate that concern and tell them that they must not enter anyone’s plot, says Johannes Persson, Hudiksvall municipal police, to Hela Hälsingland.
At the same time, the police have started an effort to see if the berry picking season is related to any crime. It is expected to respond in a few weeks.
However, there are still no reports that can be linked to berry pickers, apart from the assault on Rogsta Bergön. This is what Police Inspector Lena Hedström says to Hela Hälsingland.
This is the right of public access
The right of public access means that everyone can move freely in the Swedish nature, which means that we use it when camping, hiking or collecting plants.
The right of public access carries both obligations and rights.
As for berries and mushrooms, they belong to the landlord “as long as they are rooted or settled on the rice.” But a landowner should not prevent anyone from choosing land where the right of public access applies.
Large-scale commercial berry harvesting is not prohibited as long as it is carried out “without any other harm or inconvenience to the owner other than to dispose of the berry.”
When it comes to camping, you can pitch your tent for “a few days”, according to the right of public access. Large groups of tents should ask the owner for permission.
