A couple of miles off the east coast of Sri Lanka, the Panama-registered New Diamond supertanker is in full swing. The ship must have run aground 40 kilometers offshore, and then must have drifted another 25 kilometers out to sea, writes Reuters.
According to a spokesman for the shipping company, there was an explosion in a boiler room, something that must have caused the fire.
So far there are no reports of oil leaks.
Extinction work in progress
The explosion may have killed one man of the crew, the remaining 22 crew members must have been rescued.
– The missing Filipino sailor is feared dead. He was seriously injured when a forehead exploded, says the spokeswoman for the shipping company, Indika de Silva, according to Reuters.
The ship was heading from Kuwait to the Indian city of Paradip.
Docking work is underway at the same time that the Sri Lankan Coast Guard works to tow the supertanker.
