The incident is the latest in a series of high-profile cases in which black people have died in connection with police interventions in the United States.
The father of five, Daniel Prude, is from Chicago and visited his brother in Rochester in March. He was mentally ill and on Monday the 23rd he had an episode that made him run out into the night barely dressed. Brother Joe Prude called the local police.
Hood spot on head
When the police found Daniel Prude at 03.15, he was naked in the middle of the street.
Video footage from police officers’ body cameras shows how, during the eleven-minute sequence, police aim stun guns at the man and order him to lie down, reports CNN.
Daniel Prude obeys and the police handcuff him. It does not resist.
More police arrive and one of them puts a supposed spitting hood on his head. He then begins to roll on the ground and when he tries to stand up, the police push him to the ground.
After three minutes, a police officer realizes that Daniel Prude has vomited inside the hood and is no longer breathing.
Complications after suffocation.
An ambulance took him to the hospital. Once there, he was brain dead, Joe Prude told reporters Wednesday. He was pronounced dead a week later.
According to the autopsy report, the cause of death is classified as homicide as a result of complications after suffocation, according to CNN.
The fact that Daniel Prude had the drug classified as a PCP drug in his blood contributed to his death, according to the coroner.
Has led to demonstrations
The family’s attorney, Elliot Shields, explains that they intend to sue authorities. It also says the family did not comment on Daniel Prude’s death until now because it took time to get the footage out of the police body cameras.
As in the cases of George Floyd and Jacob Blake, the circumstances surrounding the actions of the police have led to demonstrations about black lives in Rochester.
– How many more siblings will have to die before society understands that this must end, says Brother Joe Prude, according to USA Today.
The New York City Attorney’s Office is conducting a criminal investigation into the incident, while the police are conducting an internal investigation.
