There are still fewer people traveling by public transport than at the same time last year. But during August, travel has started to pick up speed again.
Significant increase
Östergötland has seen a marked increase in the number of travelers. Kalmar also reports great pressure on public transport and in Stockholm, rail traffic in the city center increased during week 34 compared to the previous week. In several counties, passengers are prevented from boarding individual high occupancy vehicles.
Good time to bathe, start of school and even more that they return to work after the holidays are some of the explanations.
To reduce the spread of Corona, the Swedish Public Health Agency wants to avoid riding public transport when it is not possible to reserve a seat. We are also advised not to travel during peak hours.
Does not follow the advice
But when the country’s 21 county administrative boards now summarize the traffic situation in recent weeks, it can be said that many travelers have not heeded the advice.
– We have traffic congestion problems at rush hour. Of course, it is the largest of the metropolitan regions, but it is also located in the country. I am concerned because it carries a risk of infection, says Marcus Björklund, director of emergency preparedness at the Skåne County Administrative Board.
When are there too many people?
It can be difficult for both commuters and drivers to know what should be classified as Corona congestion. When should passengers be denied access to the bus? And how close is too close when you, as a passenger, can’t keep an arm’s length away from your fellow travelers?
The county administrative boards of the country want an answer to this. Therefore, they ask for national guidelines on what is congestion in public transport.
– We think it is a problem that is difficult to assess if you are in a situation where there are too many people, says Marcus Björklund.
How could such a set of regulations look in concrete terms on the bus or on the train?
– Of course, you can limit the number of people who can simply continue. The driver could count heads. You can also set a set of rules on how you can mark how many places can be used or that you can only have seated travelers.
