Until recently, Staffan Olsson has served as the sounding board and athletic director for the United States national team. But the mission ended after just four months due to the corona pandemic.
– I had a shorter contract so both parties could feel it and see where it was going. The United States is really at the beginning with its handball and when the crown came, all fell silent, he said this summer.
Since then, Olsson, who is one of the greatest Swedish handball profiles of all time, has been itching for a new coaching job. In addition to his prestigious work as captain of the Swedish national team (2008-2016), the 56-year-old has also coached Hammarby (2004-2011) and Paris Saint-Germain (2015-2018).
Now it is clear that the legend will begin a collaboration with HK Varberg.
– Of course we are very proud and happy that Staffan is part of our elite investment in HK Varberg; He will bring a lot of knowledge and experience to our entire association, says Kent Carlson, Elite Manager HK Varberg, in a press release.
“I’m interested”
HK Varberg is making his second season in the Handball League and has the ambition to establish himself in the highest league.
Staffan Olsson will work with individual player development within elite operations.
– I look forward to working with HK Varberg and Hasse Karlsson (head coach) and contributing and creating the best conditions to reach the next step in development and achieve new sporting successes. I have received a very positive image of HK Varberg as an association, which with small funds has been able to make great strides in Swedish handball. When the opportunity arose, I became interested and now I hope I can contribute my knowledge and experience, he says.
Staffan Olsson is one of our most deserving handball players with, among other things, four gold medals at the World Cup, four at the European Championship and three Olympic silver medals. He also has several championship titles from his professional years in Germany. As a coach, he won three Swedish Championship golds, three French league golds and one Olympic silver as captain of the national team.
