“We will do everything in our power to break the curve of violence,” says Patrick Ungsäter, head of the Stockholm North Police Zone, when the Rinkeby police station opened to the public. Th Rinkeby Local Police Area Chief Therese Rosengren.
The vulnerable Stockholm suburb of Rinkeby has been at the center of several violent gang settlements.
When the new police station now opens to the public, it sends an important signal, according to police.
– It’s a statement: we are here. We do not give up. We will stay, says Patrick Ungsäter, head of the Stockholm North police area.
In light of recent violent acts in criminal circles, the new Rinkebyplan police station opened its doors to the public on Tuesday.
The police house was completed in early June, but is only now fully operational.
– I think it means an incredible deal to the citizens of Rinkeby that we are in the place. It is an important symbol to have a police house in the area, but it also creates a closeness with the citizens who live here. It will be the proximity to the area, the proximity to other actors with whom we collaborate, the proximity when we want to create relationships, says Therese Rosengren, area manager of the local police.
The hope is both to strengthen the police work against crime in the area and to increase the safety of the residents.
Remove young
In recent years, northwest Stockholm has been rocked by several violent shootings. This summer alone, several people have been killed and others seriously injured.
TT: How dire is the situation in gang settings?
– Is seriously. And it has several funds. One analysis is about the fact that we have never before arrested so many perpetrators, never seized so many weapons, drugs and money. This is clearly the case for criminal structures. They enter the networks quite young that they become performers. It will be chaos in a sense and that may be what we see now, says Patrick Ungsäter.
He emphasizes that a large part of the work going forward is stopping the growth of loosely assembled gang networks.
– We have decided to individually identify those we want to divert from the track. We will do that work together. It is primarily the responsibility of social services, but we have to be there to identify them and also be there for support.
“Increased security”
Social services will be staffed at the police station, says Rinkeby-Kista district director Susanne Leinsköld.
– For us in the administration, it is a great thing to have the police house here. I am completely convinced that it will mean better collaboration and the opportunity to be able to work on the issues that are important to us, says Susanne Leinsköld.
– This is an area where many companies have disappeared for quite some time for various reasons. That now society shows that we are coming back, that the value of the signal cannot be underestimated, says Fredrik Jurdell, district director of Spånga-Tensta.
The people Rinkeby TT talks to are positive about the new police station.
– There will be greater security and protection in the area. It will be a little quieter, says Keise Jama.
The fact that the police are nearby has several advantages, he says.
– Young people leave before the police arrive. Now that someone is being shot, the police can quickly reach the scene.
Sharpen your efforts
Aswa, who doesn’t want to give her last name, thinks it’s a good start.
– You’re worried about the young people here, he says.
The police must redouble their efforts, he believes.
– They are alone in the center, but they do not know what happens in the rest of the area. When they come here, young people find other hiding places. Police must do more rounds in the area, Aswa says.
Now it will be harder for the gangs to work, says Rano Khassanova.
– I think young people are more afraid of doing something when the police are around.
But when the police are asked when the enormous spiral of violence can be broken, the answer remains in the air.
– We will do everything in our power to break the curve of violence. At the same time, you should not be naive. In terms of attitude, we must be prepared for the fact that this is a development that we have and that it will continue for some time, says Patrick Ungsäter.
