On Tuesday at 8 p.m. Swedish time, President Donald Trump landed in Kenosha, the city that has been at the center of attention across the United States in recent days. The protests have been extensive and persistent after police shot the father of several children, Jacob Blake, 29, during a Black Lives Matter demonstration in the city.
– We will see some of the damage that has been caused. We’ll fix it. We will help people rebuild their Kenosha business. It has been a great state. Amazing people, Trump said when he landed at the airport outside of Kenosha.
Many are concerned that Trump’s visit to the city will spark unrest in the already polarized city and a massive security crackdown surrounds the visit.
Small business owner Scott in Kenosha completely destroyed his business; now he has to meet with the president.
Trump visited store owner Scott
Signs in Scott Carpenter’s dilapidated store now read “No Justice, No Peace” – No Justice, No Peace.
His store became Trump’s first stop. Before the visit, Carpenter told him that he was called by the president’s staff a few days ago and said he was nervous.
– Of course I was happy but shocked. Now I’m just waiting for him to come here, it feels exciting and a little nervous.
– My wife wrote me a letter asking me to deliver it to the president.
In addition to the Carpenter deal, Trump also visited a school and the city emergency center. Then it was time for a roundtable on security.
“These are not peaceful protests, they are internal terrorism,” Trump said during the conversation about protesters who destroyed people’s property.
I did not meet Jacob Blake’s family
What was not on the program was a visit to the family of Jacob Blake, the man who shot was deserted was the beginning of the big protests this week.
Trump has stated that the reason is that the family has wanted to bring in lawyers, writes CNN. Shortly before Trump landed in the city, Blake’s family and friends held a press conference in which they announced their opposition to Trump’s visit.
– We know why Trump is here in Kenosha today. He is here to create chaos and fear; We reject this attempt to divide us, says Tanya McClean, a friend of the family during the press conference.
“It’s like a television show”
Large barricades have been installed in the area where Trump is located. Outside the barricades, a lot of people have gathered. Some to show their support for the president, others to show their opposition. One of those present is the lawyer Xavier Solis, 41 years old.
– Trump gave me the go-ahead, he’s the president of the United States, so yeah, it felt good. No matter what I think of him, I’m glad he came here and see how the last few days have been for us. Our entire office was demolished, he says.
Another eagerly awaiting Trump’s visit was Carl, 63, who was sitting on his porch watching the police raid on the street. During the visit, he and his daughter-in-law Ivory were completely trapped in their home behind barricades.
– It’s like a television show, he says.
– Trump goes here to show himself, it’s to get more votes.
