Since last Monday, children and young people should be tested if they have symptoms of covid-19. Anders Tegnell specifies how parents should think:
– If the child gets worse, has a fever and a cough, it may be time to talk to the health system. A runny nose that continues is not a problem.
The Swedish Public Health Agency now recommends that preschool-age children, as well as school and high school students, be screened for symptoms of COVID-19.
“In this way, children can return to school more quickly if they have a negative test result,” the authority said on its website on Monday.
After Tuesday’s press conference, Aftonbladet asked Anders Tegnell to specify the advice.
In some preschools, coughing seems to be enough for staff to call and ask parents to bring the child home. How should preschools act when children show signs of a cold?
– It is important that we try to land at a reasonable level, so that children do not stay home from preschool for too long periods. Now we are taking a first step by making it possible for children to get tested, so that absenteeism is reduced to what it was this spring, Tegnell responds.
What is your advice for parents with snotty children?
– Be aware that symptoms change. If the child gets worse, has a fever and a cough, then it may be time to talk to the health system. A runny nose that continues in the same way is not a problem.
To date, 850,000 people living with Covid-19 have died. How many will die from the disease around the world?
– It is very difficult to know. We are in a situation where things are improving in many regions with many inhabitants, so we will likely see significantly higher numbers before the pandemic ends.
Employees at a home for people with dementia in Katrineholm worry that high school students practicing there will bring the corona virus into the home. Is it appropriate for school students to practice in nursing homes?
– You’ve been very careful with that now during the summer, and I think you still have to think about that part. Definitely, the same rules should apply to this group as to regular staff. Then each company must conduct its own risk assessment.
The spread of the infection is increasing in many European countries. Do I need to apply more travel restrictions?
– Not like we see it now. We do not see that this affects the spread of the infection in Sweden significantly.
Mouth guards locally can be a complement in special situations, for example in public transport, you say now. Who should check that people wear mouth guards? Can a fine be imposed?
– No, we do not see in front of us that this will be some kind of mandatory measures, but this will be a recommendation that in certain situations you use mouth guards.
Even if we get a vaccine, preventive measures must remain for the foreseeable future, Johan Carlson said yesterday. Could it be five years?
– It’s hard to tell. In five years, we must have ended up in a situation where we can continue to live that way for a long time. In some respects, it will probably be a little different when the pandemic is over and Covid-19 has passed into some kind of normal state. We may work more at home than we used to and make sure to be a little less crowded on public transportation.
