The issue of infectivity of children in the pandemic has been a hot topic this spring and now the Public Health Agency has sent new guidelines to regions on what to do when school-age children show symptoms.
Consistent with the above recommendations, school-age children with mild symptoms were encouraged to stay home until they were healthy. But the new recommendations say children should be tested for COVID-19 as soon as possible.
– Children and young people feel good about being able to participate in school and other daily activities, it is an important reason to try this age group. Previously, this group was advised to stay home at the slightest symptom. With the tests, they will be able to go back to school to a greater extent even if they have mild symptoms remaining, in combination with a negative test result, says Karin Tegmark Wisell, department head at the Swedish Public Health Agency, in a press release. .
Tegmark Wisell: Hasn’t changed his mind
The recommendations apply to children in the preschool class and up. In cases where children have not been sampled for whatever reason, the authority urges the child to stay home until two days have passed without symptoms.
Karin Tegmark Wisell says, however, that they haven’t changed her perception that children don’t infect as much as adults.
– Our previous assessment remains that children are infected to a lesser extent than adults and that the school environment has not been shown to be a driving force in the spread of infection, says Karin Tegmark Wisell.
