The corona pandemic has ended larger gatherings since last spring. It is not yet clear what it will be like on the other side of the turn of the year.

“There are many uncertainties in the ongoing pandemic that make working on the 400th anniversary challenging. There is great uncertainty about how the celebration could be carried out ”, writes all the parties in the municipal board except SD in a joint demand that lands that they want to advance the celebration.

The president of the municipal board, Axel Josefson, says that it is sad that this decision has to be made, but as the situation is, there is no other alternative.

Hospitality in deep crisis

On August 12, the board of the municipal company Göteborg & Co, responsible for the city’s 400th anniversary celebrations, raised the idea of moving the celebration to 2023 for the municipal board’s working committee. So as one of the three options.

A week later, Göteborg & Co got down to business and decided that a move was the best option, under the prevailing circumstances. The main arguments are that the uncertainty is too great and that the hotel industry has indicated that it will not be able to cope with a celebration next year: “Visit Västra is in its deepest crisis and wants the celebration to move forward,” writes Göteborg & Co .

Gothenburg received its city privileges on June 4, 1621, and the idea is that a smaller “formal historic” celebration will be held next year to mark 400 years since the city’s founding.

– We will still start the anniversary in 2021 and then we will have different thematic years until 2023. We will go back to the exact focus, says Axel Josefson.

Several 100 year olds

Then a great celebration awaits in 2023, when Liseberg, Stadsteatern, Botaniska Trädgården, Naturhistoriska museet, Konstmuseet and Götaplatsen can also be celebrated 100 years. The politicians on the municipal board agree that a measure is the right thing to do.

– The most important thing for me is that it will be a folk festival for the people of Gothenburg. If we cannot have it in 2021, then it is better that we move the celebration to 2023, says Daniel Bernmar, councilor (V).

Politicians also agree that the celebration should be kept within the previously decided budget of SEK 100 million. The formal decision will be made by the municipal board on Wednesday.
