About 15 percent of those recorded as dead from covid-19 at the hospital actually died of something else, such as cancer or heart disease. The average age of those who died in the room was also 83. For those in the intensive care unit, the average age was 69, the region writes in a press release.
“Fragile before”
– Many of those who have died in the hospital have been sick and frail even before receiving covid-19. And those who have died in the ward had more extensive comorbidity and frailty than those who have died in the intensive care unit, says Stefan Franzén, medical director for the region.
Long care times
The region has reviewed the records of the 123 patients who died at one of the county hospitals with confirmed covid-19 until July 31. Of them, 98 people died in the room and 25 in Iva. The region has previously examined those who died with confirmed covid-19 outside the hospitals.
– This is a complex disease, where those who are really fragile and have many different diseases have difficulties assimilating intensive care.
The survey also shows prolonged care periods for those cared for in intensive care units with a mean of 24.2 days.
