The man, who is on trial Monday, was responsible for and owner of a chrome workshop in Hovslätt, on the outskirts of Jönköping. The company was declared bankrupt in November 2016. In January this year, the man was charged with a serious environmental crime. Several tons of chemicals, including cyanide, were stored wide open at the facility. It was so big that, according to the prosecutor, it could have killed 14 million people.
– Experts from the National Forensic Center worked for five days at the site to map the hazardous waste. Improperly stored cyanide-containing substances have been stored so that they can form hydrogen cyanide in lethal doses, Chief Prosecutor Stefan Edwardson said in connection with the prosecution.
Denies serious environmental crimes
Negotiations in the district court were scheduled for this spring, but due to the corona pandemic and the fact that the suspect belongs to a risk group, the trial has been moved to today, August 31.
The suspect has admitted that he kept the chemicals, but in connection with the accusation against him, his lawyer announced that he denies a serious environmental crime.
In the clip below, the SVT reporter talks about the accusation.
