What role does conviction play in Denmark?
– The obvious effect is that Swedish gang members will withdraw to plan assassinations in that country. But then there is the question of whether the deterrent effect can be transferred to Sweden. They are away from this criminal game plan and that of course makes sense, as they cannot recruit new ones and plan new acts of violence. On the other hand, it goes very fast. So much has happened in southern Järva since they were arrested a year ago. I don’t think anyone in the police in any way yells hello here, says Lasse Wierup.
Who decides in the groups?
– There is definitely a hierarchical structure. This is how it is seen, for example, in the Death Patrol, to which the five prisoners belong. Among the five, it is clear that one of them has a leadership position because he has been part of the original nucleus since 2015. The 17 and 18 year olds are newly hired and do exactly what the leader says. I thought I could see for myself how they constantly looked at the designated leader when they had to answer questions from the prosecutor during the trial.
Some gangs speak in terms of war. What is all this?
– The simple answer is that it is often about drugs and control over where to sell them. Along the Stockholm metro system, there are a lot of places where drugs have been sold for a long time and where it is important to be present. With camera surveillance, it’s become a bit more pervasive, but in many areas it’s about who controls the street and sales can bring in a lot of money.
