Macron warns of a new closure: cases increase

The spread of the infection is picking up in France just days before the country’s 13 million schoolchildren return to school for the first time since March, Euronews reports.

On Friday 7,379 new people infected with covid were discovered. It’s very close to the record 7,578 on March 31, when the first wave of the pandemic hit the worst.

Since then, the number has dropped to a few hundred a day, now skyrocketing again in a second wave. According to the Ministry of Health, the increase in the spread of the infection is now “exponential”.

“Nothing can be ruled out”

“We are doing everything we can to avoid a new shutdown, especially a national shutdown,” said French President Emmanuel Macron, warning:

– Nothing can be ruled out.

French authorities say the high number of new infections can be partly explained by more evidence. The number of tests is now up to 890,000 per week, and the goal is one million.

France imposed a severe shutdown in March when people were largely forced to stay home. The restrictions were gradually lifted as of May 11, after the spread of the infection drastically reduced.
