Thousands of people protested in Mauritius’ capital Port Louis on Saturday, demanding an investigation into a massive oil spill and the subsequent discovery of at least 40 dead dolphins.

The oil spill occurred on the Japanese freighter MV Wakashio, which ran aground on a coral reef in the Indian Ocean on July 25 and began leaking its cargo two weeks later. Since then, several dead dolphins have turned up on the beaches of Mauritius.

Environmental activists are demanding a proper investigation to find out if they died as a result of the oil leak.

– We do not trust the government and the vague information they gave us about the handling of the oil spill, says 33-year-old protester and environmental researcher Fabiola Monty.

The government has promised that autopsies will be performed on all dead dolphins and has formed a commission to investigate the leak. Veterinarians who have so far only had time to examine two dolphins say they carry traces of injuries but no oil has been found on their bodies, according to preliminary results.
