Some 300 people gathered at Amiralsgatan in Malmö to protest that the Koran had been burned and kicked earlier that day.
The protests escalated overnight.
– They have collected a large amount of debris that caught fire, says Rickard Lundqvist, Police Region South press spokesman.
By 02:30, the crowd had dispersed and several people had been arrested.
There has been backlash in Malmö overnight against the critical actions of Islam that have taken place in various places in the city.
More than 300 people gathered at Amiralsgatan near Rosengård to protest the events. Police were allowed to close traffic around Amiralsgatan, but considered the situation calm.
– We have a continuous disturbance to the extent that traffic is obstructed. We have it under control, says Rickard Lundqvist, Police Region South press spokesman.
But the situation has worsened overnight. Fireworks have been lit and objects have been thrown at police personnel. In addition, a fire has started on the road.
– We have a fire on the street where they removed debris and lit fires. The situation has now turned into a violent revolt, says Rickard Lundqvist.
At 11:30 p.m. the situation was still complicated. According to Sydsvenskan, people continue to protest around Rosengård and the police testify about the damage suffered by both the police and the rescue service vehicles.
-We do not hide under a chair that the situation is not under control, Rickard Lundqvist tells the newspaper.
Just before 01, stones and burning objects were still thrown at the police. At 0230, traffic was allowed on Amiralsgatan again and the crowd at the site had dispersed, according to Sydsvenskan.
Several people have been detained overnight, but at the moment there is no information on personal injury.

Far-right politicians were arrested
According to the police, the crowd is connected to the burning of the Koran that took place that same day in the Emilstorp industrial zone by representatives of the Danish far-right Stram Kurs party.
Another action critical of Islam took place at Stortorget in Malmö, where three people were arrested for inciting an ethnic group after kicking a Koran.
These actions are in turn a reaction to the fact that Stram Kurs party leader Rasmus Paludans was denied permission to hold a meeting in Malmö on “Islamization in the Nordic countries” where the burning of the Quran was rumored it was one of the stops. Paludans was invited by Swedish street artist and provocateur Dan Park.
On Friday, Paludan was detained and turned away at the border with Sweden and imposed a two-year entry ban, Sydsvenskan reports.
Fire in cars and garage
It is also concerning in other places in Malmö at the moment. Several cars have been set on fire in various places just over a kilometer from the riots.
Also, there is a fire in an underground garage in south Rosengård.
– But if all this is connected, it is too early to say, says Rickard Lundqvist.
