In the fall, Helen Mirren rescued the dreaded miniseries “Catherine the Great” in the role of the mature Russian Empress, a staunch international power player from the throne in 1762 until her death in 1796. The new HBO comedy series “The Great “turns the clock back to 1745. Catherine is a 15-year-old German Princess by the name of Sophie Friederike Auguste (Elle Fanning) when she arrives in St. Petersburg to marry her one-year-old brother, Karl Peter Ulrik, known as Emperor Peter III during his brief time on the throne in the spring of 1762.
