The national team ahead of next season, which was presented at a press conference via the video link on Thursday morning, is dominated by women.
Last winter has made it even clearer that Swedish ladies have world class, while there are few gentlemen who manage to take the top positions.
“We have chosen to recruit more women as they perform at such a high international level,” says new national team manager Anders Byström.
In the team of the A-national team there are a total of nine runners and five runners. Emma Ribom, Linn Svahn and Moa Lundgren secure places on Team A after their strong efforts at the World Cup last season.
There are five women and three men on the development team. Therefore, no special support is made for knights of that level.
– We want to invest a lot in elite environments in different parts of the country and keep the pressure at home. We believe it is important for men to save high-quality runners in their homeland that we do not choose them for the national team. So it is important to have a competitive situation, it will be very necessary to enter the national team, so that we can reach the leadership that is required, says Anders Byström.
He comes from the biathlon team., and points out that the situation in which Swedish athletes claim better internationally than men is in various sports. The union is in contact with the Swedish Olympic Committee, among other things, to find out why.
– We will continue to discuss whether we can make joint efforts with various sports, says Anders Byström.
One reason why men’s and women’s national teams merge is because of the economy. With the current crown pandemic, one must take the risk that there will be no World Cup this winter.
– In the times that prevail now, we need to coordinate a little more, says Anders Byström.
But the most important thing is that it matters on how to use existing skills. Ladies and gentlemen will now go to joint camps if, given the contagion situation in the community, it will be possible to conduct training camps this fall.
– We should be able to take advantage of the experience available in this group for the runners, it will be easier if we are a joint team. It should benefit cyclists and the entire organization, says Anders Byström.
On the coach’s side, women shine with his absence.
The future of female managers Magnus Ingesson and Stefan Thomson, who is also Charlotte Kalla’s personal trainer, has been uncertain since Expressen published information that the national team skaters were unhappy.
Now they will collaborate with new coaches Anders Högberg and Lars Ljung. Heather, with a background on the Swedish Olympic Committee, will be responsible for the development team. Högberg, who has lived in Norway for several years, has been active in the ski environment there and for the past two years has been the Chinese federal team.
