There is, of all things, a connection between covid-19 and children affected by a serious inflammatory disease in various countries.
The condition is unusual, but serious. According to Italian researchers in the medical journal The Lancet.
Recently, several cases were reported in which children in the UK and Italy suffered from a severe inflammatory disease. Since several of the children had tested positive for covid-19, suspicions soon arose that it was the coronavirus. Soon after, 15 cases were also discovered in New York, USA. USA, Three of whom died later. Even in the UK, children have died.
Now Italian researchers in the journal The Lancet describe ten cases discovered in the province of Bergamo, in northern Italy, one of the areas most affected by the virus.
It affects the blood vessels.
The syndrome is reminiscent of Kawasaki disease, a very unusual inflammatory syndrome that generally affects the blood vessels of children under the age of five. However, despite the fact that only 19 children have been diagnosed with this disease in the province of Bergamo in the last five years and until mid-February this year, ten cases were detected between February 18 and 20. April 2020, which means a 30-fold increase in the number of cases.

There is a link between the coronavirus and the unusual syndrome found in some children, according to Italian doctors.
Worst symptoms
Eight of the children tested positive using an antibody test for a covid-19 infection. All of the children in the study survived, but those who were sick were affected by worse symptoms than those diagnosed before the pandemic, the researchers write. Furthermore, these children were slightly older, averaging 7.5 years, compared to the three years before the pandemic. Half of the children had signs of toxic shock syndrome, a life-threatening condition with organ failure, and a drop in blood pressure as a result.
– We are starting to see cases of children with Kawasaki-like disease, even in other areas that are severely affected by the virus, such as south-east England and New York. Our study provides the first clear evidence of a link between sars-cov-2 infection and this inflammatory condition, something we hope will help doctors and others try to understand this unknown virus, says Lorenzo D´Antiga, one of The authors of the study.

No risk group
Russell Viner, a professor at the Royal College of Pediatrics in the UK, who was not involved in the current study, writes in a comment that children are not a risk group for coronavirus and that the vast majority have only mild or no illness. symptom.
Kawasaki disease means that the blood vessels become inflamed and swollen, where the blood vessels surrounding the heart can also be affected. Typical symptoms are redness of the skin, red eyes, dry and chapped lips, as well as swollen glands. The condition is rarely fatal if treated in hospitals, using immunoglobulin and steroids.
It is unknown what the disease is due to, but there is a suspicion that it is caused by the body’s immune system to react unnaturally to an infection. The syndrome normally affects only one child for every 100,000 children.
