Liverpool won the final last year.

The Champions League changes the television channel for the first time in Sweden.

Now TV4 and C More confirm that they have purchased the rights to the soccer tournament.

“We know it is a sporting event that will attract a lot of interest and will attract a large audience,” says Casten Almqvist, CEO of TV4 Media.

The TV sports industry has been waiting for TV4’s new owner, Telia, to flex its muscles for the first time and now comes the first show of strength. The television channel, which for this season lost the right to broadcast the men’s soccer hall, has been in charge of the Champions League since 2021.

– The UEFA Champions League has long been at the top of our sports rights wish list. This investment is a prime example of how we at TV4 Media, now with Telia as our owner, further elevate our ambitions to create Sweden’s best television experiences, says Casten Almqvist, CEO of TV4 Media, in a press release.

Paying a billion a season

The international soccer tournament, where the best club teams in Europe meet, has been broadcast on Viasat channels since its founding in 1992.

– The price was simply too high to extend that right. We have had it since its inception in 1992 and we are the only company in the world that has it, Per Nunstedt told Nent Group when the news broke that they lost the right in early April.

According to previous data on Dagens Media, TV4 pays just over SEK 1 billion per season for CL’s rights.
