National team skater Martin Bergström ends, for the second time, at just 28 years old.
As a result, the World Cup loses one of its strange birds.
– It has been an everyday life that has excluded many other things, Bergström tells Sportbladet.
Many of the world’s top skiers are characterized by one thing: their purely manic elite commitment. A life where everyday life is spent eating well, exercising correctly and resting well.
In the middle of this world, Martin Bergström has made his way to the national team in a different way. For five years, the 28-year-old has combined his elite investment in skiing with studies.
But when the civil engineering program in industrial economics is soon completed, Bergström also decides to abandon skiing.
– Without much thought, I felt it was the right decision to move on.

“It didn’t measure well”
What attracts is a job in a company in the Norwegian Tromsö, where his girlfriend already lives.
– I hope I can spend even more time with her, but also with friends, of course. I’ve hardly had a chance to say yes to things more spontaneously and a less complicated schedule means I can say yes to more adventures now. I am looking forward to it.
Although Martin Bergström combined one hundred percent skiing with roughly one hundred percent study, the results on the ski slope have been impressive. A total of 19 World Cup starts were highlighted for Sweden with fifth place in the sprint in Falun 2019.
How has having two full-time jobs worked?
– It becomes very exclusive to other things when you really have to work hard and be dedicated and structured to keep up. But I think I am a person who wants to do many different things and that is why now it is enough. I am happy with my ski career, but also happy that there is now room to do something else.
Although I could have achieved better results if I were more manic focused on one thing?
– No I dont think so. I don’t think it was good in the long run, although it obviously works very well for others.
Have you felt like a strange bird in the ski circus?
– When it comes to training and planning, I have done it like many others. But I have not been an A4 driver. Not many people study to the extent that I did for five years. I think I still managed to recover between the passports, but at the same time I didn’t get much more outside of the two study and ski areas. That is what life has been around for quite some time.

Bad communication behind the conflict.
In 2015, Bergström finished his career for the first time when he moved to the United States to study. However, the sport retains its control over it, and the adventure ended in place with the Swedes in 2017 named the top US college driver. USA
Now, however, Bergström believes that the combination of the profession in Norway and an investment at the elite level is unsustainable.
The end comes after a season marked by disagreements that rocked the Swedish ski team on the leader’s side. Martin Bergström, on the other hand, believes that the dispute is really based on poor communication rather than actual differences of opinion.
– As I said, I have had a lot to do in my own plan, so I have not speculated or participated in the conflict, but I think it is based on frustration. Communication has not worked between all associations, and friction arises. You can blame one and the other, but it’s not really a big deal. Then I would say anyway.
Has that situation affected your decision in any way?
– No, I wouldn’t say that.
What will you miss most about skiing?
– The competitions. When the snow falls next winter I will definitely miss the bubble you enter. That now you are tense, nervous and now the competitions where it will be really fun to give everything on the tracks.
