Nurse Therése Mechlenburg received approval from hospital management to film in the recently opened covid-19 department at Vrinevis Hospital in Norrköping.
– Of course, I was hesitant to film a patient. But both Hjalle and his relatives thought it was fine. And Hjalle wanted to be part of showing a positive image, says Therése Mechlenburg, who makes a video diary for SVT Nyheter Öst.
Here you will find his video diary.
When the film was shot, Jan “Hjalle” Hjalmarsson was on the covid-19 respirator for several weeks. He cannot breathe and has a tube in his windpipe, so he cannot speak.
“Imitate and write notes”
– But he imitates and writes in notes. So we can still communicate. And when she starts to feel better, we laugh a lot together, says underwater nurse Therése Mechlenburg, who worked near Hjalle.
Hjalle was treated on the ventilator for over a month. Now he has had to leave the intensive care unit and is being rehabilitated in a care department. He has seen the video and approved that we post it.
Here you can read more about Hjalle and listen to his son Peter talk about the dramatic weeks and the father’s first phone call when he was able to speak again.
