Public Health Authority: “Small proportion who are asymptomatic”

There is great uncertainty about whether you can be sick on covid-19 without symptoms.

When the World Health Organization (WHO) held its daily press conference on Monday inadvertently discarded the image of many infected.

According to several studies in the USA. In the US, Europe and Asia, only between one and ten percent of those analyzed had antibodies against the virus.

– There was a perception when the virus started spreading that we only saw severe cases and that most people would become infected without realizing it, but these studies show otherwise. The total number of infected cases is probably much lower than we thought, says WHO crisis management manager Michael Ryan.

FHM: a small proportion

The Public Health Authority insists that the proportion of people who are ill without symptoms is not as extensive, but they do not want to completely rule out the possibility.

In their first cross-sectional study, conducted in late March, everyone who tested positive for covid-19 had experienced some type of symptom.

– We continue to maintain that a small proportion is asymptomatic. We still have to keep that in mind, and that is why we believe that it is important to keep a distance, and especially in the elderly, if it constitutes a small part of the spread of the disease, says Karin Tegmark-Wisell.

More may be infected in Sweden

Although relatively few signs of antibody were shown in the new studies, the spread may be greater in Sweden.

– Worldwide, it may be true that this is so. So we know that it is different in different countries. There is also a big difference in exposure at the regional, and sometimes local, level. Where there have been major outbreaks, the figure will look different.

The authority is currently conducting antibody tests that they hope can give a clearer idea of how many have had covid-19 in Sweden. The results are expected next week.

“Very dangerous”

During its press conference, the WHO also criticized countries that have a strategy for achieving batch immunity, calling it a “very, very dangerous approach.”

Karin Tegmark-Wisell again denied that it was part of Sweden’s crown strategy.

– There has never been any self-interest on our part, the Swedish strategy, that we should achieve herd immunity. However, it can be a consequence if you have a high morbidity in society that obtains a higher immunity in those parts of the world where the morbidity has been higher compared to where it has been lower.
