Confirmed: Sebastian Vettel leaves Ferrari after 2020 Formula 1 season

After five years with the most legendary figure in Formula 1, Sebastian Vettel will not continue at Ferrari after 2020. The decision is said to be joint, but it will come after a long contract negotiation where the parties are said to have remained very far away.

– Stable and I have concluded that we don’t want to continue together after this season. Finance has played no role in this joint decision. It is not something that affects me when I make important decisions and it never will be, Vettel says in the statement.

“It was not an easy decision to make, given Sebastian’s value as a driver and person,” Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto said in the statement.

Vettel remains without contract for 2021 and it is unclear whether it even continues in Formula 1. The Corona pandemic has dealt a financial blow to the automotive sports car class and there are few vacancies among the leading figures.

– For my part, I intend to take some time and think about what is really important to my future, says Vettel, 32.

This year’s season had to be canceled just a few days before the Melbourne premiere in March due to the crown pandemic and it is unclear when the next Grand Prix may run, despite plans for a race in Austria to beginning of July.

The German Vettel was installed in formula 1 in the late 00s and took his four consecutive World Cup titles – 2010-2013 – for the Red Bull stable before coming to Ferrari for the 2015 season.

He won 14 races in the Italian red car, but last year he was challenged by his new stable partner Charles Leclerc, who won two races, while Vettel had a difficult year. The young Monegasque is seen as the future promise of Ferrari.
