The new department belongs to the Eastern Hospital medicine clinic.

There are 18 care sites for patients who have been seriously ill on covid-19 and need ongoing care, training and rehabilitation.

– Covid-19 patients who have been anesthetized and had a ventilator often have a long-term need for hospital care and rehabilitation. In order to meet this need for care efficiently and with high quality, we now open a special aftercare department, says Maria Taranger, Östra manager of medicine, geriatrics and emergency room operations at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, in a Press release.

Only healthy patients

In the department, several specialists work with rehabilitation, such as physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses and dietitians.

– We optimize the staffing for this type of patient and their needs. Patients who can move here must be medically stable enough and need care, rehabilitation and exercise. This facilitates rehabilitation so that they can move freely in the room, says Maria Taranger in the press release.

In the department, there are only healthy crown patients.

– Because patients in the ward are infectious, we can staff the ward with staff who for various reasons cannot work in a ward with infectious patients with covid-19. In this way, we free up resources both in wards treating infectious patients with covid-19 and in our regular care wards, says Maria Taranger.
