Björn Eriksson believes that the extension will lead to longer queues, plus how much cannot be said.
Non-emergency care is postponed in Stockholm, this time until August 31, the Stockholm region says. The reason is the crown pandemic, as well as the fact that health workers will receive vacations during the summer.
“Our employees who have worked so hard for a long period of time need an opportunity to rest,” says Björn Eriksson, director of medical and health services in the Stockholm region.
In late March, the Stockholm region decided to postpone planned care. On Friday, the decision came that it will not resume during the summer, reports Dagens Nyheter.
“We have decided to postpone the planned care until August 31,” says Björn Eriksson, director of health in the Stockholm region to TT.
The decision should allow care staff vacations without risking the ability to care for patients affected by covid-19. This also means that health care staff from private health care providers can continue to provide services over the summer. The region also wants to be able to manage health care if the epidemic worsens during the summer.
It mainly applies to emergency hospitals.
The decision does not affect all health care providers, but primarily emergency hospitals. TT reported on Friday that the Karolinska University Hospital is in emergency mode to care for those who have had to wait. But it is not the planned care that begins, but the care that cannot wait any longer without serious consequences.
– They refer to chronic patients who have had to wait. The patients who are now on trial need the necessary medical attention that has been postponed because there has been so much pressure. But hips and knees don’t start operating, says Björn Eriksson.
Make yourself longer queues
Postponing planned care means longer waiting times for many patients.
– There will be more queues, but how much more do I not know. In the summer months during the holidays, there is generally a lower level of activity, we mainly practice emergency medical care at that time, “says Björn Eriksson.
9,227 people infected with the coronavirus have been found in Stockholm, and 1,660 people with covid-19 have died in the county.
