Large parts of Kenya have now regained power after a major power outage that affected Kenya and neighboring Uganda on Saturday morning.
The electricity disappeared just before 5 in the morning. By lunchtime, the central business district of Nairobi and some surrounding neighborhoods had regained power, and for three, most of the country, including major cities, had regained power.
The outages are due to a disturbance in the power grid between the Kenyan cities of Nairobi and Olkaria, according to electricity provider Kenya Power.
As Uganda and Kenya share power lines, both countries were affected by the outage. It is still unclear to what extent electricity has returned to Uganda, but the country’s electricity provider UETCL writes on Twitter shortly before 3pm that the power supply was “fully restored” as early as morning. .
This is not the first time that the power grid in Kenya and Uganda has been affected by outages. In January 2018, a similar power outage occurred in the countries.
