Opinion: “The Signal Artist” – Mint Kunsthall, ABF House, Sveavägen 41

IN The basement of the ABF house, in the old Svea Gallery, is the Mint Art Hall. Since last year, it has been led by talented curatorial duo Asrin Haidari and Emily Fahlén. In the ongoing exhibition “The Cartoonist”, Thea Ekström (1920-1988) is presented in parallel with the experimental filmmaker Eivor Burbeck (1926-1965) and contemporary artists Milena Bonilla and Thale Vangen.

Although there are some common threads in these very diverse and exciting works of art, there is no balance as a whole. It is not clear if it is a group exhibition on a subject, or a separate exhibition with all the extras. Thea Ekström’s paintings and drawings fill the largest room, and deliberately or inadvertently form the core. The other artists, each worthy of their own good, have the ungrateful role of tuning in like a temporary choir in the background. This type of jump limit works best in biennials and in larger contexts. It feels more built than justified in the confined space.
