About 300 Swedes are believed to have traveled to Syria or Iraq to join violent groups, according to Säpo. However, it is unclear how many of those who have joined the terrorist group IS have been killed, reports Radio Ekot of Sweden. According to previous estimates, it should be around 50 people.

“We believe that there may be people who are said to have died and who are still alive,” Ahn-Za Hagström, a senior analyst with the Security Police, told radio.

There is some uncertainty in the data, she says.

– After all, it may be the purpose of individual individuals to pretend that they have passed away, and it may be the same purpose of family members to produce what a person has passed away. This is something we must consider.

Säpo cooperates with the police authorities and the security services, but in some cases it is difficult to obtain confirmed information.

– We do the evaluation in each case and continuously. The situation in the area is such that it requires many law enforcement agencies to be able to obtain the necessary information to confirm or rule out, says Ahn-Za Hagström.
