Defense Committee President: Corona has destabilized Europe

Former Defense Minister Björn von Sydow (S), who heads the politically composed Defense Committee, did not utter the words about the major powers when he was invited to leave from defense group Saab on Friday in a live broadcast.

– China’s leadership is a dictatorship, Russia’s leadership is a dictatorship. The United States has a labile state. It remains to be seen who the new president will be, Sydow said.

Sydow also pointed to the “newer” nuclear powers in India and Pakistan.

The subject of the hearing was whether the crown crisis increased the military threat to Sweden.

– All the arrangement that was built after the Second World War that we are currently celebrating. Today it is weakened in a very destructive way. And it is the great power competition that is at its peak, he said among other things.

“New opportunities for Moscow”

Sydow has closed so far is that Russia receives benefits from corona virus security policy.

– It has destabilized Europe above all. Because we are about 50 different countries, most are genuine democracies. But this opens up new opportunities for holders of political power, for example in Moscow, to feel constantly. Where is there a weakness? Where will the unsatisfied people be?

That confirms the need for a superpower, if it is friendly, Sydow said.

– Sweden and Finland are small countries. One must have a superpower presence in some way, a friendly set superpower in the long run must be behind Sweden and Finland.

Created: “Global Mega Crisis”

Former Prime Minister Carl Bildt (M) also participated in the hearing. He said the pandemic was a “global mega crisis, but it still brought it down a bit.”

– We have not suffered any collapse for society. It is important to emphasize, Bildt said.

On the other hand, Bildt estimates that the crisis will continue. Therefore, it is difficult to say exactly about the time during and after the crown pandemic, he says.

– How it will develop in the next two, three, four years, we do not know. In all likelihood, within five years, it will look very different in several important ways.

He highlighted the responsibility of the EU in particular.

– The EU must play a greater role on the global playing field. We have seen that they were successful in global health issues. € 8 billion was raised for vaccine research and vaccine production. It was the EU that was able to do this.
