The peak of the spread of the virus has reached Stockholm and fewer cases are now expected per day, according to analysis by the Public Health Authority. At the same time, 1,765 people in Sweden are reported to have died in covid-19 suites, an increase of 185 people in the past 24 hours.
Anders Wallensten, Deputy State Epidemiologist for the Public Health Authority and Morgan Olofsson, Communications Director for the Swedish Agency for Social Protection and Emergency Preparedness.
“It has been a weekend and there are now a lot of cases on the same day, but they are actually scattered many days ago,” says deputy state epidemiologist Anders Wallensten at the authorities’ daily press conference.
A total of 15,322 people were confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus in Sweden.
If you look at a seven-day moving average, you can see that the infected curve begins to flatten, says Wallensten.
– You can see it’s quite flat, he says.
The number of people in intensive care has not budged, either, he says.
According to estimates made by the Public Health Authority, a third of Stockholm County residents may have carried the virus on May 1.
– We have concluded that most of the new cases in Stockholm occurred on April 15. Therefore, just a week ago, the peak was reached according to this model. So we can expect fewer cases per day, says Anders Wallensten.
However, this does not mean you should breathe out in Stockholm, he says.
– Together we can stop the infection. And we have to keep doing it, even if it looks like we’ve reached the plateau. It no longer increases, but it does not mean there will not be much spread of the infection. According to the model, two thirds are not yet infected and can become infected.
Anders Wallensten receives a question that Denmark can allow public gatherings of up to 500 people in May and if there is any such plan in Sweden.
– Not right now. We have no plans for that. We are looking at when help may be needed, says Anders Wallensten.
