Last fall, the International Soccer Association (FIFA) made a billion dollar bet on women’s soccer over the next four years. It stands firm despite the crown crisis, says FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Last fall, FIFA announced that it would spend a total of $ 1 billion (just under € 1 billion) on women’s football over the next four years, a doubling of the amount previously budgeted.
But it is not relevant to reduce that investment, despite a tense financial situation as a result of the current crown pandemic, now ensures FIFA.
Alarming report
– This funding has already been committed by FIFA and will not be affected by the covid-19 crisis. The money will be invested in various areas on the women’s side, such as competencies, skill development, leadership, professionalization and technical development, a Fifa spokesperson told The Guardian.
This is good news for women’s football, which is said to be more exposed when virtually all sports are stopped. Last week, the international players’ union Fifpro released a report warning that the entire existence of women’s football is almost threatened by the crown crisis.

– Unfortunately, women’s soccer, especially in some parts of the world, does not have the same status as men’s soccer. And that’s where you cut, Caroline Jönsson, a former goalkeeper for the Swedish national team and now a member of the Fifpro board, told TT about the report.
Concern has also been expressed that the women’s side is not included when FIFA presents its soccer crisis plan during the pandemic.
– FIFA is now working to help soccer worldwide, including women’s soccer. Exactly what this aid will look like is being discussed right now in consultation with bans on members, confederations and other interested parties, says the Fifa spokesman.
