It all started late Saturday night in the small community of Portapique. The offender drove what looked like a police car and, on at least one occasion, wore parts of a police uniform. During the night, he toured Nova Scotia and shot at least 19 people, including a police officer. The first alarms about the incident were about shooting at a house in Portapique.
When police arrived at the scene, several victims were found inside and outside the home, said Chris Leather, commander of the Nova Scotia Police Department.
Several community buildings had been burned down and the author entered into an exchange of fire with the police. Only later was it discovered that the man killed more people elsewhere.
The death toll may increase further as the police map out the man’s act of insanity.
The unknown subject
On Sunday morning local time, the police pursued the 51-year-old man along one of the province’s busiest highways. The trip ended at a gas station 3.5 miles north of Halifax at lunchtime, local media reported.
According to police, there appear to be no known links between the shooter and at least some of his victims. Their motive is still unknown, but police are not investigating the killings as a terrorist offense, according to CBC News.
The fact that this person had a uniform and a police car at their disposal indicates that it was not an unplanned act, says Chris Leather.

The offender worked at a dental clinic in Dartmouth, and police are investigating whether the mass shooting may be related to the coronavirus outbreak, as quarantine rules in Canada have forced the closure of unnecessary operations temporarily.

The vision of weapons is much stricter in Canada than in the United States, and such acts are rare. This weekend’s event is the worst of its kind in modern Canadian history. The last comparable act of violence was when a perpetrator murdered 14 women in Montreal in 1989.
