For more than a month, children in Spain have been forced to stay indoors to limit the spread of infection. But soon some of them can expect to get out and play, in limited ways.

Since the emergency occurred on March 14, 8.3 million children in Spain have been referred to stay at home. They do not have, since their parents had the opportunity to go shopping, go out with the dog or throw the garbage. But now there will be change.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Saturday that from April 27, children will have the opportunity to leave home every day to go out and enjoy the fresh air. At the same time, he announces that he is asking Parliament to extend the national emergency until May 9.

From twelve years

– We are aware that many boys and girls live trapped in apartments of 30 or 40 square meters and that they need oxygen, says the prime minister according to El País.

The details are unclear, for example, whether the relief should apply to Spain as a whole or only to certain regions. Sánchez will consult with experts and regional leaders before returning to the criteria, but mentions children up to 12 years old as a possible age limit.

It is clear that the new freedom for children will be allowed in limited ways that do not increase the risk of spread.

Mayor’s Appeal

This week, Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau on Facebook called on the government to “free our children,” reports the BBC.

“If adults can walk the dog, why do children have to wait?” Asked the great-grandmother. She described how her three- and nine-year-old children fight each other more frequently and have moments of pain and anger.

Spain is one of the most affected countries in the world, with more than 20,000 deaths as a result of covid-19 and more than 191,000 confirmed cases. In addition, the official death toll is being questioned because statistics on several of the country’s 17 autonomous regions have not seen homes of unexamined deceased old people and elderly residents.
