Malmö Redhawks: Corona crisis hits Malmö hard

After a ninth place on the SHL table, the idea was that the Malmö Redhawks would play the playoffs for a spot for the quarterfinals.

But the crown crisis hit in full force, ending the hockey season prematurely.

There are still several clubs, with an open match schedule and an uncertain financial future.

Including the Malmö Redhawks.

– Me and some others have been fighting for eight or nine years, and we have had our noses just above the surface of the water and sometimes below. Once we have our faces on the surface of the water, this is where it comes from, says sports director Patrik Sylvegård, who at the same time points out that Malmö is doing well and is not in a more serious crisis:

– We have organized this club and we are doing well. Better than we have in a long time. I’m not saying it’s a “walk in the park”, but we feel much better.

“Don’t get into that trap”

Despite the crown crisis, Malmö has been active in the player market. Until Wednesday, Oliver Lauridsen signed a three-year contract with the Redhawks, which means the Skåne outfit is nailed.

The near future may reveal whether there will be any new acquisitions.

– We will not fall back into that trap where we first build the team and then earn income. We must first be clear about what we have to earn before we fully nail the team, says Patrik Sylvegård.

Cut your player budget

Even before SHL’s long season, Malmö underwent a cheap steel band. The club did not meet the league’s financial licensing requirements and was forced to accumulate greater equity.

Before the crown crisis, the idea was that the Scania would spend a little more on their team of players in the 2020/21 season than the year before.

But then it won’t be.

– We will not have the squad that we had budgeted for before the crown arrived, says Patrik Sylvegård, noting:

– We should be happy if we present last year’s budget.

In addition to Oliver Lauridsen, Malmö has also acquired Markus Lauridsen, Pathrik and Ponthus Westerholm, and Victor Backman.
