Travelers evacuated from Australia and New Zealand get off a specially chartered plane in Melbourne.
More than 100 travelers who have been evacuated from a virus cruise in Uruguay have landed with a specially chartered plane in Melbourne, Australia.
“Thanks to all involved, a very difficult mission,” Australian Chancellor Marise Payne wrote on Twitter.
Now hospitalization for those who are sick and 14 days in quarantine awaits them in a hotel for those without symptoms of covid-19.
For more than two weeks, the Australian ship Greg Mortimer was off the coast of the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo, while the covid-19 rolled out on board. At least 128 of the 217 tourists, mostly elderly, tested positive for the coronavirus and the ship was unable to enter the port
After negotiations with the countries of origin of the passengers, the ship was finally able to enter Montevideo on Saturday and around 110 Australian and New Zealand travelers were immediately transferred to Australia.
Staying on the cruise in Uruguay, there are still Americans, British, Jamaicans and people from different European countries, according to the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry. Negotiations with their respective countries of origin are ongoing.
In Australia, another 1,200 travelers are expected to arrive on Sunday with an evacuation plan from India and Peru.
