The race is in full swing, and many pharmaceutical companies want to cross the finish line only after developing a coronavirus vaccine.
In many places it is established that a vaccine can take years to produce.
Earlier this week, however, the New York Times wrote that researchers at the English University of Oxford intend to produce several million doses in early September this year.
It is a race in which the Swedish-British biopharmaceutical company Astra Zeneca now chooses to participate.
On Thursday Astra Zeneca announced a partnership with Oxford to continue developing the vaccine.
– A team of our best employees is working with the best researchers in Oxford to get vaccinated as soon as possible. As we have also collaborated with them, we already have solid relationships, ”said Mene Pangalos, director of research for Astra Zeneca.
The vaccine has been tested on monkeys – successfully
He goes on to tell the newspaper that the vaccine, which was previously tested on monkeys, should have been tested in the summer on more than 5,000 subjects.
The idea is that the tests should be intensified. In the middle of this year, Astra Zeneca and the University of Oxford hope to start the so-called late tests.
– If you look at how far we have progressed in development, this vaccine is at the forefront compared to other vaccines that are being tested around the world. But many of the vaccines use different bases, and the more types of vaccines tested, the better. Obviously, it increases the possibility that one of them will be successful, explains Mene Pangalos to DN.
