The corona virus continues to create important consequences for society. According to a tax forecast for Sweden’s municipalities and regions, the pandemic risks creating a recession that can last for several years.
At the same time, the municipal cash registers are expected to hit hard.
According to the forecast, the municipality of Gothenburg will lose SEK 912 million in tax revenue during the year. This corresponds to approximately 1,600 SEK per inhabitant in Gothenburg.
However, Axel Josefson (M), chairman of the city’s municipal council, says Gothenburg is well equipped.
Gothenburg is better equipped today than if any of the other budgets were to win. We have a 2.6 billion SEK profit equalization reserve that we can use under certain conditions and a two-percent budget surplus requirement that can generate 600-700 million that we can also use, he tells GP.
Difficult to establish budget
Axel Josefson cannot answer how the loss of revenue will affect the municipality of Gothenburg, but he is convinced that Gothenburg will have to prioritize the budget again.
For this reason, Axel Josefson wants the government to help municipalities make their budgets. Partly freezing the forecast, but also setting an amount of revenue.
– Normally, the differences don’t get that big between the forecast and the reality, but now they can be very big. It will be difficult to build a budget then, he tells GP.
According to SKR’s forecast, in addition to Gothenburg, among others, Mölndal will lose almost SEK 109 million, Kungsbacka SEK 132 million and Kungälv SEK 72 million.
