The Stockholm region has warned that depression, suicide and abuse are expected to increase as a result of the crown eruption. Psychiatry prepares for a greatly increased mental illness. Right now, people are working with emergency help for patients, staff and family at all Stockholm hospitals.
According to state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell, the Public Health Authority is very aware of this aspect. A deeper analysis has yet to be done, but he believes that the Swedish strategy affects mental health in a milder way than in many other countries.
– We absolutely believe that the type of social distancing that we recommend and that has been introduced in Sweden has significantly fewer side effects than the models used in many other countries, says Anders Tegnell.
– It is very important to pay attention to this problem. From health care and others, one should agree that this can be an effect that we must help in different ways to manage in a good way and possibly try to prevent.
Anders Tegnell He says that the Public Health Authority is working to stop a development where mental health is becoming widespread and to identify which groups of people are at risk.
Thomas Lindén, department head of the National Board of Health, also sees a development in which the crown pandemic attacks already vulnerable people.
– Just as the virus affects people with the smallest medical margins, all measures in the form of shutdowns and other things will affect people with the smallest social and economic margins. It will be very difficult for a 55-year-old man with a low education to become unemployed in the future. And not everyone can, to the same extent, help children who cannot go to school with their learning, says Thomas Lindén.
Many older people experience this as a major problem with social distancing. Is it a group that is at risk for mental illness?
– Even before covid-19 we have captured that loneliness among the elderly is one of our main public health problems. That problem is being compounded by forced isolation and you can imagine it leading to depression, alcoholism, and suicide.
According to Anders Tegnell, there is no relief from the restrictions in view of people over the age of 70 who suffer from being unable to reunite with their grandchildren and friends.
– No, unfortunately not. That is one of the most difficult questions we have left. Eventually many other restrictions can be stepped on, but as long as this virus exists, people over the age of 70 will likely be a risk group for quite some time, says Anders Tegnell.
The confirmed number Covid-19 cases worldwide are now more than three million and more than 210,000 people have died.
– There are very large numbers. Numbers so large that it becomes difficult to understand the scope. It has been a long time since the world experienced something similar, Anders Tegnell said at Wednesday’s press conference.
In Sweden, a total of 2,462 people have died in covid-19 suites. This is an increase of 107 people in the last 24 hours. A total of 20,302 have been infected by the virus.
