For a few months in 2018, Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy for illegal immigrants was applied, and thousands of parents and children were separated at the border and between the United States and Mexico.
The policy was halted after massive global criticism, and images of young children placed in a prison-like hold were deleted.
It was later revealed that the separation policy came into effect as early as 2017, during a pilot program, when more than 1,000 children were separated from their parents.
“The children stayed”
Half of the families that were separated during the pilot program in 2017 have not yet been reunited, as it has not been possible to find the children’s parents, reports NBC News.
“The tragic truth is that hundreds of parents were deported to Central America without their children, who remain here in foster families or long-distance relatives,” said Lee Gelernt, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU.
Lee Gelernt says that despite the difficulties, the ACLU continues to work to try to reunite the divided families.

FAMILY SEPARATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES
Family separations were part of Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” reform package for illegal immigration and were introduced in April 2018.
Separations had already occurred during a “pilot program” in which the policy was tested in 2017.
Previous presidents had made exceptions for undocumented people traveling with children.
Under Trump’s policy, adults who tried to enter the country from the Mexican border were illegally treated as criminal suspects, but not their children. The families were divided and held in separate detention centers.
Family separations shocked the United States and the outside world, and Donald Trump succumbed to criticism.
The policy was repealed in June 2018 and the process began to reunite thousands of children with their parents.
