Days before the violent attack on Friday, history teacher Samuel Paty had given a lesson on freedom of expression. The 47-year-old man showed a photo of the Prophet Muhammad, to explain the terrorist attack in the 2015 Charlie Hebdo newspaper.
Paty warned before showing the image: those who wanted could leave the classroom, Franceinfo reports.
– He told them that he would show them a photo and asked those who wanted to leave the classroom so that they would not be angry or surprised, says a father to the newspaper.
But the lesson provoked anger among some. The history teacher was met with complaints and death threats. It was rumored that he was Islamophobic and racist.
Killed in terrorist acts
On Friday, Samuel Paty was killed. He was attacked near the school in the municipality of Conflans Saint-Honorine.
The 18-year-old killer must have been criticized “allahu akbar” before the police shot him dead.
The terrorist attack has left teachers, students and parents in mourning. One student describes Samuel Paty as a dedicated teacher who loved his job.
– He really liked teaching us things. It happened that we debated, we talked, the 16-year-old tells BFMTV.
Demo for the teacher
President Emmanuel Macron has announced that a national demonstration will be held for Samuel Paty. But already on Saturday, the teachers came out in homage to the colleague. They manifest themselves under the motto “Je suis eseignant” – “I am a teacher”.
The police have arrested nine people linked to the incident. Several of them are said to be related to the killer and two have children at the school where Samuel Paty worked.
