The terrorist attack in the United States on September 11, 2001
The terrorist attack was carried out by the al-Qaeda terrorist organization. The terrorists hijacked several planes. Two were taken directly to the World Trade Center in New York.
The first plane crashed directly into the north tower of the World Trade Center between floors 93 and 99. The second plane hit the south tower between floors 77 and 85. In less than two hours, both towers collapsed. A third hijacked plane crashed the same day at the Pentagon in Virginia. A fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers resisted the terrorists.
In all, some 3,000 people lost their lives.
Al-Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden became the most persecuted man in the world when he later took on the attacks. Bin Laden was assassinated on May 2, 2011 by some 20 elite US soldiers at his hideout in Pakistan.
