The Rosstat State Statistical Institute has released new figures showing that the number of people who died from covid in Russia is increasing. These are people who have died with an ongoing coronary infection in the body. During all of last year, 162,000 people died from covid. Since then, the number has increased by another 38,000 people. However, the stats lag behind for a whole month and the latest compilation is from January.

The total death toll differs greatly from those reported by the Kremlin. They report only 88,000 deaths so far during the pandemic. The state only counts deaths where corona infection has been determined with certainty as the leading cause of death, according to Novaya Gazeta.

According to the Johns Hopkins American University Hospital, Russia ranks fourth among the countries in the world that have had the most confirmed cases, so far a total of about 4,250,000.

Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Tatiana Golikova declared on Friday that 5 million Russians have received at least one dose of vaccine, half of them have received two doses. This is 3.5 and 1.7 percent of the population, respectively.

– The regions of the country continue to increase the vaccination rate, he said during a press conference.

According to Golikova, 14 million doses of vaccines have been produced in the country to date.

Russia chose to close society with severe restrictions when the first wave of the pandemic hit last spring. When the number of infections rose again in September, a less restrictive line was chosen with recommendations and certain coercive measures in certain regions.

According to official figures from the Russian state, the situation in the country has improved in recent weeks. Rosstat also reports a slightly smaller increase in the number of cases in January compared to December.

Moscow has chosen to ease some of the restrictions that have long prevailed. Home quarantine for people over 65 who belong to a risk group is now only a recommendation and travel documents for people over 65 are reactivated on public transport.

According to the mayor of the city Sergei Sobyanin has been able to make the relays due to the improvement of the situation.

– The number of infected has decreased five times compared to the peak at the end of last year, says Sobyanin.

The reliefs coincide with March 8, International Women’s Day, an important holiday in Russia.
