20,000 students and employees of Umeå University will undergo massive covid-19 testing starting Monday.
The purpose is to find out whether regular college teaching increases the spread of the infection.
– It’s a great experiment, says Anders Johansson, infectious disease researcher at Umeå University, in SVT’s Morgonstudion.
The study is the largest ever conducted in Sweden regarding testing and the spread of infection and will run for two weeks. All will be tested twice.
– We test the first week how many have the infection and then when everyone gets together a week later, we test how many have contracted it, says Anders Johansson.
In recent times, infection has increased especially among young people, at the same time that the spread of infection has so far been low in Umeå. Therefore, the tests will be interesting from both a national and international perspective, explains Anders Johansson.
– This is a way to get an answer to the question of whether it is possible to start teaching on campus with regular physical education or whether the spread of infection increases, he says.
In addition to the Swedish Public Health Agency and the National Pandemic Center, the Swedish Armed Forces will also assist in testing to be conducted at three different stations on the university campus.
