Some 2,000 people in Ethiopia are accused of the riots that erupted after the murder of political activist and singer Hachalu Hundessa.
He was assassinated in late June in the capital Addis Ababa. After their death, violence broke out and many died in ethnically motivated violence and during clashes with the army and police.
More than 9,000 people were arrested after the riots.
– The current figure we have is about 2,000 suspects who are charged with their involvement in the violence that has occurred in the Oromi region, says Attorney General Gedion Timotheos.
It says that more than 160 people died in the riots. It was previously reported that 240 were killed.
Among the suspects are leading critics of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, including opposition politicians Jawar Mohammed and Bekele Gerba. But Gedion Timotheos denies that the allegations are politically motivated.
