A reading package that focuses on school, library, and parents. It is the medicine against less children who read, according to the January holidays.
The government, C and L invest SEK 200 million a year in the autumn budget to increase reading for children and young people, reports Dagens Nyheter. The money will go to preschool and elementary school teachers to receive special training on how to help children crack the early reading code. Libraries are supported to increase their presence and reach, and parents should be helped to spark the interest of 1-3 year olds in reading.
Furthermore, research is being carried out since the so-called 2018 reading delegation, where researchers and authors developed proposals to give children the same opportunities for adequate reading ability and a greater desire to read.
– We see many children growing up with poor vocabulary, which means that they have difficulties in school and in some cases finish primary school without qualifying for upper secondary. A six-year-old should have a vocabulary of 10,000 words, but if you look at many children in particularly vulnerable areas, their vocabulary consists of just 2,000 words, liberal party leader Nyamko Sabuni tells DN.
The fall budget is submitted in full on September 21.
