Blekinge Region infection control doctor Bengt Wittesjö announces that the region is currently investigating whether 14 corona cases have been linked to the mink industry.

– You work in the mining industry or are part of a family with ties to it. So we cannot say now how the infection has gone, if the people have infected each other or if the infection comes from minks, Bengt Wittesjö tells SVT Nyheter Blekinge.

The new figure is an increase of five people in two days. Earlier this week, massive testing of mining industry personnel began at Blekinge.

Infection in 13 of 40 mink farms

Expressen was able to report earlier this week that 13 of the country’s around 40 mink farms have been confirmed to be infected with covid-19.

The Swedish Public Health Agency, the Swedish Veterinary Institute (SVA) and the Swedish Board of Agriculture are investigating how the infection spreads between humans and mink.

– We regularly bring about 80 people working in the mink industry in the municipality of Sölvesborg, says Bengt Wittesjö to SVT.

Abandoned farms reported

Due to the risk of infection, the Swedish Board of Agriculture has introduced restrictions for all mink farms in the country. These are strict rules for transport, visits to mink farms and people with suspected infection should avoid staying near mink.

Information about the new restrictions for mink farms was sent to 51 companies, but 25 of them were no longer active in the mink industry, according to the Animal Rights Alliance.

– Obviously, the responsible authority does not know which mink farms are currently active in Sweden. The question is what the consequences will be if half of all mink farms in the country are not sent the new restrictions, Daniel Rolke, president of the Animal Rights Alliance, told Expressen.
